Copy first sentence of paragraph and paste into second column

Perhaps I should be posting in the Newbie area, but my question is in regards to PHP (5.2.6) and MySql (5.x). I've been out of coding practice for several years now and find I'm a little lost. 😕 This seems like it should be simple!

How would I go about selecting table X, column (Y), and copy just the first sentence of the paragraph to column (Z) - in the same table, for every row in that table?

Any direction would be appreciated. Or even a dirty example to see, would be awesome.
