php developers developing for smartphones, any advices?

Not too many people are using wml for wap now, right? Most smart phone browsers accept the xhtml tags now.

And some people say, as a php developer, you just design your web application as it is and use different css for web and wap.

There got be more than that in the difference for php developers programming for the regular web pages and programming for the smart phones.

Any advices, resource links, experience, anything you can share about php programming for smart phones, will be much appreciated.

Generally, it seems these days I see many sites simply using a separate sub-domain or directory for hand-held devices, as opposed to doing some sort of content negotiation to determine what gets served up.

You could use a sub-domain, but simply have it point to the main site directory. Then have a PHP configuration script included at the top of each page that checks to see if the user accessed the page via the sub-domain or not, and if so set some variable to true. Then you could use that variable to determine what content does or does not get displayed. You could also display a navigation link to the hand-held sub-domain or the main (www.) domain, depending on that flag.

Does that mean if it is for mobile programming pages, I should follow the css standards like this

In addition to css for mobile, what else I should be aware? Such as the size should be for suitable for the smart phone screens, the out put should be brief and min. These are just general principles, are there any books or online resource can explain these in detail?

Stay away from flash and javascript for smart phones websites. iPhone supports Javascript pretty well, but no flash at all.

The old threads about wml and wmlscripts regarding wap are out of date. But not too many new threads about wap for today.

And I am looking for the wap theme for some popular off shelf e-commerce systems, such as magento etc. I cannot find one.

Any resources, any good samples, such as the wap theme or wap front end pages of any popular OSS, you can recommend? with at least one of them, I can read and learn from why and how they do it.

I don't know if zen cart has the wap theme or wap front end pages etc. I will check that out.
