What open-source social networking do you recommend?

Hello to all of you out there,

I'm looking into building a Social Networking site, and I'm trying to figure out what my options are.

I'm looking for open source, PHP (LAMP) of course, and I would love to get some feedback from those of you who have some experience with any of the available options out there.

If your good at php and coding, phpizabi is a great open source base,
however, the support has died and is very hard to get help if your a newb like I am lol.

First, thanks for taking the time to reply.

I would love to know what make PHPibazi stand out of the crowd, especially since, as you mentioned, it is an abandoned project? Does it at least have some kind of a community around it?

Among the things I look for in any project is community around it, and usually the more popular ones have a greater community base around them and they are also usually quite good at what they do. Take Drupal and Joomla as an example. They are both great, and they both got a great user base. I am looking for the same thing, albeit in the Social Networking scene this time.

Well, I found PHPIZABI to be a very nice standalone CORE, pretty simply and easy.
MOst other were not open source and free.

PHPIzabi had great potential, however, the developers got in a pissing contest and one locked the other out etc lol.

So it really seems to be a dead project now.

But if you want a base to start with, then it is still good, then modify it they way you want.

As for a community, no, it is pretty much dead.

Have you looked at Elgg at the time? How about the Dolphin script?
