Migrating old application

Hello to all experts!

The old php/mysql (version 2.x) application is not working correctly on the server with the newer version (5.x).
I've looked at the database, and noticed that half of the tables have duplicate primary keys.

some of my questions are;

How come there are so many tables with duplicate key errors?
What could possibly cause this?
Would it better to try and fix, or do a complete make over?
What is the recommended way to safely migrate the old application to a newer version?

I'd appreciate any tips, advice and guidance anyone could give.

PHP and MySQL are separate pieces of software and each has their own version.

If your application was written for PHP 2, that is OLD as my grandma's wooden bra. I would suggest writing it over.

If your database has duplicate key errors, then you need to think about how to get rid of them. Which one is the right key?

Haha please!! give me a little more credit than that. I might be new to php but not new to programming. What I meant was a shorthand for saying 2.x/2.x respectively.

I agree with your suggestion. However, what if you have no choice but to keep the old php codes but still need to communicate to a newer mysql?

The current stable releases are PHP 5.2.9 and 5.3.0.

PHP 4.0.0 was released in 2000. I have no idea when the PHP 2.x releases were: the oldest release referred to on the official PHP Releases page is 3.0.18, and there is no change log for it (or anything earlier, obviously) to give any idea as to what might have changed from any PHP 2 releases. (My guess is that you'll find that MySQL was on a more-or-less similar time table with regard to versions.)

All I can suggest is to try running the scripts in your new environment with all error reporting turned on, and see what happens (keeping a fire extinguisher close to hand). :eek: It will either (miraculously) work, will have some errors you can chase down and fix without too much trouble, or fail so miserably that you'll decide to start from scratch, maybe following the old code as a general road map (or just throwing it out completely).
