[RESOLVED] date() function

I wasn't sure where to post this so I posted it here, if it needs to be moved then please do so.

I'm currently learning PHP and installed it on my WinXP computer so I didn't have to keep loading it onto our purchased hosting and using bandwidth. Everything has been going smoothly until now.

I get to the date() function (just doing simple codes to learn it) and when I have it typed out into my .php file and saved I refresh that file in my browser and it doesn't work, sometimes I even get a "Page note found" message. But, if I load that file onto our purchased hosting it works fine.

So I dont think it's the code, but I'm not sure what it could be.

sorry, I'm new to this and still learning....

I followed Microsofts instructions on installing IIS on WinXP, then did a Google search on how to configure it. After that I installed FastCGI. Then I followed the instructions on PHP.net and installed PHP with the windows installer.

So no, I haven't install a web server like apache.

After reading your reply I took a look at apache.org and found the downloads. I was wondering which installer I should download? the one with no ssl or with openssl?

IIS is a webserver, so you don't need apache (if you get IIS to work and are happy with it).

Depends on wether you need it or not.

yeah, I've been doing some searching and found that out.

so if I have everything installed that I need why wont the date() function work properly? Do I not have IIS setup correctly?

I can't say that I would need one or the other (IIS or Apache). I'm in the learning stages and so I don't have any specific needs right now to know if I should be using one over the other.

Should I remove IIS 5.1 from the computer and install Apache? Should I leave IIS 5.1 and not worry about Apache? Or install Apache as well as leave IIS 5.1 running (I found some stuff that shows how to have them both installed but...)?

Is there any advantage of one over the other?

looking into this more, I would prefer to keep IIS working seeing as how I want to continue learning ASP as well.

in the meantime however, I did a work-around to get my XAMPP working from my portable flash drive so I can start the Apache server from there and continue learning PHP from that.

But I would like to have it all working from one server so I don't have to keep separate directories or type in different url's so if anyone has any suggestions on why some of the php codes aren't working on my local install I would appreciate the help.

figure I would post a quick update...

I decided to uninstall PHP and FastCGI and reinstall just PHP using the zip download and manually configure it using a tutorial I found online. I did this a couple weeks or so ago and it's been working fine since.

Not sure what went wrong with the installer package but it's working now so it's all good.
