Permission Issues

Hi,
Ok, Just before you get confused, I do not write PHP, I am simply a newbie to USING PHP.
I get rather schtuck when trying to load these in my browser. I run XAMPP for linux (on ubuntu). I place the files in the 'htdocs' folder and when I try to run one of them it gives me a notice, 'Warning: fopen(../settings.php) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /opt/lampp/htdocs/PHP_Point_Of_Sale_9.1/install/installer.php on line 9
Operation Failed!' now, this is an error occurring during the install process of a PHP POS (Point of Sale) I load the first file (Index.php) however, when I try to load the next file (After entering my language) it gives me the message of doom. Any help would be appreciated, and I acknowledge that I am not in your circle of (like) people.

You probably have to set the permission to 0777 (full access) on settings.php.

I would read up on unix permissions because 0777 may not be the best permission setting depending on what you're doing.
