opendir current directory

What's the difference between these two (if there is any)?

opendir('./')
opendir('.') 

It says open the current directory, but is there any difference between using dot-slash or just a dot? Cause sometimes I see the one mentioned and sometimes the other when talking about reading the current directory.

It would be the same difference as:

opendir('/usr/home/foo/directory/');
opendir('/usr/home/foo/directory');

As far as I know either will work, though I don't know if that's a PHP feature or if it's dependent on the underlying operating system allowing the trailing slash (and therefore possibly not working in all environments).
