[RESOLVED] Preselect Dropdown Menu from Database option?

Hey, my first post on here, so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!

Brief explination of what im doing...
I am currently building a edit page for team members in a local coastguard station. using php the form recalls the information from the mysql database using .htmlentites., one problem i am having is a drop down box i have used for the persons rank is not selecting the rank stored in the database. so when the page is edited the person's rank reverts to the first one on the list. i want the function to read the database and preselect the persons office on the form.

Is this possible? i also wish to redirect the person after they submit the updated form, taking them back to the admin_team.php page in the samefolder, however i cannot use the headers function.

Page included in a zip file, please forgive the lack of comments etc, am pretty new to php and its probably a bit of a mess.:queasy:

You're missing the closing tags on your <option> statements.

ok done this so my code now looks like...

<select name="rank" value="'.htmlentities($row['Rank']).'">
<option value="Coastguard Rescue Officer">Coastguard Rescue Officer</ option>
<option value="Deputy Station Officer">Deputy Station Officer</ option>
<option value="Station Officer">Station Officer</ option>
</select>

however this is still not having the desired effect of selecting what is already in the database.... it still resets to Coastguard Rescue officer when the edit page is loaded... anyone? please? :bemused:

If I'm understanding you correctly you want to have the drop down list selected to show the current rank in the row retrieved?

If so, then what you want to do is use <option selected value="$row['rank']></option>

You can do that by using an if statement something like:

<?php
echo "<select name=\"rank\">";
if ($row['rank'] == "Coastguard Rescue Officer") {
   echo "<option selected value="Coastguard Rescue Officer">Coastguard Rescue Officer</option>

etc...
}

?>

If you needed a case for if the row didn't equal any of those values then stick a <option selected value=""></option> in there.

If you had a really long list of options then I'd use a foreach to sort through the ranks.

Currently my php for the page looks like this below, with arrans help, however its returning a parse error and i cant see where... it's probably lookin me in the face just cant see it... :s help?!
