search next future date and most recent

Anyone got any ideas on how best to do this search query?

Basically, I have a list of dates within records. What I need is a search query that will retrieve the first 'passed' date and the next 'future' date (limited to just the 2 records).

Can I do this within one query?

assuming your dates are stored as DATETIME or DATE fields, you could try something like this:

// passed date
SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE date_field < NOW() LIMIT 1
// next date
SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE date_field > NOW() LIMIT 1
