Help Post/Get Function

I have inherited a site that uses php and the extent of my php knowledge is limited to the book I just picked up about 20 minutes ago. HELP!

Here's my dilemma and scenario I'm trying to resolve.

User hits our site; new or existing (no account required, no uid, no password)
Sees two buttons at top of page; 1-New User 2-Edit Profile
Number 1, the New user button is working, simple load form.
Number 2, the Edit profile button is not.

Here's what the boss would like to see happen. User hits our site, clicks on Edit Profile. This should initiate three actions;
1) Prompt user for email address
2) Validate record of user exists based on user=email
3) Send email to user with link to existing profile

When user clicks on link in email, this will open session with existing profile information.

So; is anyone familiar with this and have some idea how I'm supposed to do this? I hope so, because I'm at a complete loss right now.

The solution would depend entirely on how you store email address and links. What does the code look like atm, and what isn't working?

Now the really sad news is I'm not even sure how to answer that question. Like I said, this is inherited and to make matters worse I think the owner tried to change/modify it himself.

When I go to; http://www.inlabventures.com/contact-us/join-mailing-list/ this the page that is supposed to let people create a new profile and the only required fields are 1st & Last name, and email address. When I view source though, it looks like it refers to the edit/update their profile option.

When I go to; http://inlabventures.com/infusionforms/new.php which is the page that's supposed to load with their profile info if they have an existing profile, the source looks wrong.

It's supposed to be simple:
Are you a new person? Yes --->
Would you like to join our email list? Yes ---> Fill out form.
Are you an existing member? Yes ---> Click here (Pop-up requesting email address on record)

{Record exists? Yes ---> Send email with link to user}
User clicks on email link and their profile record loads.
{Record exists? No ---> (Pop-up: Record not found, please create new user profile)}

Does that help or make it worse? Sorry I really want to help so you can help me...

Looks like there's no php parsing being done at all.

Also, if you can't show the code, I can't help you. Moreover, if you, in the code, can't find how it stores and retrieves stored data, perhaps it's time to hire someone.
