mod_rewrite, first variable?

hello all.

just wondering if there';s an easy way to get the first part of the url?

at the mo i'm doing;

RewriteRule ^whats-on/ sectionList.php?section=whats-on [L]

whereas i'd like to be able to do something like;

RewriteRule ^$/ sectionList.php?section=$1 [L]

is that even possible?

In pattern-matching syntax, $ signifies the END of the string.

I think you want someting like this:

RewriteRule ^(.*)/ sectionList.php?section=$1

or perhaps this:

RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/ sectionList.php?section=$1

cheers - that seemed to work! But i didn't anticpate the issues it would cause. ie other rules.

ie i have an admin folder but now i can't get to it...

RewriteRule ^youradmin/$ youradmin$1 [L] // doesn't seem to work

RewriteRule ^(.*)/ index.php?section=$1

do you know how i might be able to use other rules in conjunction with RewriteRule ^(.*)/ index.php?section=$1

any pointer appreciated... D.

Put this new rule last? Also, the [L] after a given rule says "if this matches, don't process any more rules after it". If you don't put the L then it continues processing rules.

mmm. something not quite right.

the public side still works

but the back end is still going to the same index.php file

htaccess looks like this;

RewriteRule ^{([^/]*)/} index.php?section=$1

RewriteRule ^youradmin/$ youradmin$1 [L]

Think about what is happening. The first rule rewrites to the index file so the second rule will always fail because by the time it gets checked, the rewrite has changed the incoming request to /index.php?section=youradmin

Like I said, put the NEW rule last.

Yerh — i've tried both at the top/bottom and both variations stop the files in the /youradmin/ director from working, always getting pushed towards the index.php in the root web folder?! With or without the [L] too! Thanks for your help but i think i'll just write the rules manually. Might try this again later but need to finish the admin for now.

RewriteRule ^youradmin/$ youradmin$1

RewriteRule ^youradmin/$ youradmin$1
RewriteRule ^{([^/]*)/} index.php?section=$1

So I'm wondering if these mod_rewrite rules are in an .htacess file or in your apache config files? If they're in the conf files, you'll need to restart apache.

Personally, I would try this:

RewriteRule ^youradmin/$ youradmin$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/ index.php?section=$1

I don't understand why that doesn't work. If it doesn't, you could try adding a RewriteCond before the second rule to make SURE it's not starting with youradmin
