I've turned part of my home computer into a webserver, i know people can access it via my IP address but how can i block people unless they have access for example a port number???

only I want to be able to access my server from remote locations not google robots etc?

You could use basic access authentication to require a user login.

The other alternative is to create a php prepend file which does some authentication for you. Require a password, and if they enter a password, set a cookie. If the cookie isn't present or they don't give the correct password, display the login page with errors until they successfully log in.

If your only concern is web spiders, then running on a port like 8080 will prevent them from automatically picking you up via IP address. Just don't link to your_ip:8080 in a public place for the spiders to pick up.
