And what does that have to do with this thread on Parse errors?

As for your problem check to see what error messages you get from your sql query, there must be one for mysql_num_rows not to be getting a value.

As rincewind456 pointed out, $result isn't a "valid MySQL result resource" because it doesn't contain a valid resource from a (successful) query to the MySQL database. Debug your query using the error message supplied by the MySQL server (e.g. via [man]mysql_error/man) and/or echo'ing out your SQL query to visually inspect it (and subsequently posting it here, if you can't spot the error).
