Checking password does not contain Special Characters

Dear All

I'm trying to check whether the Username does not contain special characters, but it is not working, could you please let me know what the issue is:

if (!preg_match("[^a-z0-9A-Z]", $upass)) echo "You must enter only a-z 0-9 A-Z characters in your password";

Please let me know where I'm going wrong.

Looks like you do not want the "!" negation operator, since you want to do the echo if the preg_match() finds a match on any disallowed character.

You need a delimiter for your regexp, e.g.:

if (preg_match("/[^a-z0-9A-Z]/", $upass)) // note the slashes used as delimiters
{
   // invalid password
}

your decreasing security by not allowing such characters in the password. All my passwords contain one or more and i would not sign up to a site that disallowed that.

And as long as the conversion was consistent, what difference would it make if it did?
