ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysq

I made privillage for localhost at phpmyadmin.
But "mysql -u user -p" shows the under-mentioned error.

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) 

My box is centos 5.3 x86 and xampp 1.7.2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure that mysql.sock is where it is supposed to be? If so, make sure file permissions are set to execute for all users.
