popen() Fuction Has Been Disabled

Greetings,

This is my first post, so if I'm in the wrong forum, feel free to move it.

I tried to install the uploadprogress PECL package using the PEAR Package Manager, and I got the following error message:

Warning: popen() has been disabled for security reasons in /var/www/domains/popupsinc.com/docs/mypear/PEAR/PEAR/Builder.php on line 440

So it appears that the popen function failed because it is listed in the disable_functions directive in the configuration file (php.ini).

I'm in a shared environment, and my hosting company won't enable popen. I also don't have shell access - just FTP. Does anyone know how I can install a PECL package with popen disabled?

I'm using PHP 5.2.9 on Debian GNU/Linux 4 on Apache 2.0.54.

You can manually download the package files and then upload them to your site. This, however, leaves it up to you to ensure you also grab any other packages that the first depends on, and upload them in the necessary directory structure, and set up your include_path to include your own root PEAR directory.

You might also want to look at http://pear.php.net/manual/en/installation.shared.php to see if any of those methods will work for you.

The uploadprogress package lists the PEAR Installer as a Dependency. Is that the same thing as the PEAR Package Manager?

Afraid I missed the fact that you're dealing with a PECL extension hear (versus a PEAR package), which I'm afraid gets you outside of my range of knowledge, as I've never tried to install one on a *nix system.
