Just built a new workstation

Well after roughly 5 years on the same machine I finally built myself a suitable workstation today

Specs:
-Intel Core I7 920
-6GB OCZ Gold
-Asus P6X58D Premium (Supports: SATA6, USB3, Gulftown)
-(2) PNY GeForce 9800 GT (1GB DDR3, 256-bit)
-Antec 1200
-Windows 7 Pro x64

Still phasing into it but Holy Moses this kills my current workstation

-Intel P4 w/Hyperthreading (ooooh ahhhh)
-2GB G-Skill
-Asus P4800D-X
-(2) EVGA GeForce 5200

My motherboard just decided a couple days ago that it just wasn't going to let sata port 1 work anymore. So now I have to get a new computer (as I've got all 6 sata ports filled. So now it's time to rebuild....

I was looking at the i7 processors and motherboards, but my god are they expensive! I can get a better clock speed and the same number of cores for roughly half the price!

AMD Phenom II X4 Deneb $185.00

Instant savings of at least $100.00!

But hey, to each his own. I've always preferred AMD over Intel mainly because of price.

You mind disclosing the final price? I'm trying to spec out my replacement, and I'm thinking I can do it for like $600 or so.

I used to be an AMD man myself but once I got onto Intel arch. I found it just was more reliable and had less issues

Nice. I haven't noticed any stability issues with AMD in particular. Specs look nice. If get the funds, I might look into switching.

The thing that really sold me are the mobo specs. Since it supports next-gen stuff (i.e. "future-proof") I don't have to worry about being stuck on today's technology.

In the past I'd buy whatever mobo combo w/mem I could get for around 200-300$ and as a result I was always behind and stuck on the platform.

I'm just now transferring files over from my Athlon 2000 with an enormous 512mb of ram (why didnt I upgrade the ram ?..), GeforceTI 4200 with dual outputs

Dell Vostro i7 860 with 4gb ram and Win7 Pro 64bit

The poor old Athlon has been stuttering over disk writes for about a year

I wouldn't normally go for Dell but it was £160 off list plus a discount voucher - no scope for overclock ..

the price for one, but again, for future upgrades... I can overclock this board 6 ways from sunday so that the ram is used at that speed but it also has a nice memory feature that basically lets you drop in any ddr3 and it works

I know it seems a bit overkill but the rig has to last me another 5-6 years so I tried to make sure I'd be in as good a position as possible going forward

But, last I knew, and I'm from a rural area where there are plenty donkeys and mules, people have to shovel the poo ... the animals just make it.
