Hi, I dont know if this is the right place to post this or not, so apologies if its not.

I've got some knowledge of PHP and mySQL and am looking to further that more with a bit of a challenege, im looking at creating a website that will allow me to update pages and upload files from one central area - so basically a CMS. Im essentially, just wondering if anybody knows of any decent tutorials with how to create something similar to what i want. I'd prefer it if the tutorial was in video form, but thats not the end of the world if its not. A few tutorials that ive found aren't the best so i figured i'd try a forum to see if anybody knows of anything thats available on the net.

if anyone could point me in the right direction of one, that'd be great.

Its a bit more tricky to find project totorials of this magnitude.
CMS isnt a program but rather a collection of programs assembled into a single functioning unit.
I'm sure you can find individual tutorials on how to upload files, do user authentication, saving and extracting data from mysql and using ajax which are all components (minus the ajax which is optional) of a CMS. I've built several custom CMS's and I'll tell you what I've learned
A) Plan longer than you think you need to, specially if for a client
😎 Build a demo or prototype to make sure you have the functionality down before commiting to it.
C) It helps if the CMS serves a specific problem, like word press did for blogs
D) Dont try to reinvent the wheel, use the tools available rather than from scratch, you'll save yourself both time and energy.

I would agree with that there is no reason to reinvent the wheel.

There are 100s of working PHP CMS to download and simply install right away.
And most of them are free open source.
The issue is more to know which one is right for you.

All CMS at that site have online DEMO, so you can even explore Admin Interface.

on the other hand a great way to learn php/mysql is by building a cms yourself

as Rulian said allow twice as long as you think it will take (or more)

.. and see Rulian's thread about the possible pitfalls of learning code versus learning the latest hip code tool/framework
(and I dont know where to stand on that issue - learn both maybe)

but as for an integrated tut I dont know - you could buy one of the php books

One thing I'd suggest before getting too far into the specifics is to read Essential PHP Security a couple times (it's pretty short). It would be a real bummer to spend a lot of time building your own CMS, only to find out after fielding it on a live site that someone has hacked it because you coded it with some gaping security hole. :eek:
