[RESOLVED] Lottery help needed

Okay I have searched the forums looking to see if anyone had already asked and found the answer but to no avail so here goes.

I am writing a lottery program.

I will have 10 columns (row id, a user, 6 number fields, a date, correct picks total)

Each morning the script will issue a winning set of 6 numbers

What I need help on is how best to check all of the entries against the winning numbers to see how many each ticket has correct

I think no matter what, you're going to have to either (a) grab every row and loop through checking each one or (b) run 6 different queries, each one looking for a different "set" of numbers, and loop through those individually. Option A would most likely be easier to implement.

What is it you want done after you check? Are you updating the column "correct picks total"? What happens when someone picks six of six? Are they eligible to win again later?

Yes I will loop through each record to see how many numbers this record has matched

Yes the user can win unlimited times

So the question is how best to compare the two sets of numbers
Pull the record and test the array against the set of wining numbers for that day. Is there a compare function that can be used or maybe some sort of loop situation.

Using
function [man]in_array/man will shorten your code a bit.
Also you can use $count++
which is same as $count = $count + 1
( $count-- ...... means same as $count = $count - 1 )

	if ($pick[$key] == $ball[0] || $pick[$key] == $ball[1] || $pick[$key] == $ball[2] || 
$pick[$key] == $ball[3] || $pick[$key] == $ball[4] || $pick[$key] == $ball[5])  

{$count = $count + 1;}

can be replaced with

if( in_array($pick[$key], $ball) )  {
    $count++;
}

    $count = count(array_intersect($pick, $ball));

The way you did it looks horrible from a maintenance and legibility standpoint.
