help with message notice

if the current user has a message or notice is will display something like this depends on the number for example:

"You have 2 unread notifications"

If the user read only one it must display the example below when he logins next time

"You have 1 unread notifications"

Any idea on how can this be done? Thanks

Performed at login and preferably stored in $_SESSION['num_notify'] or some such.
