Is catalog website made by php or not? Your opinion please

Hi everyone

I have a question that I'm asking myself since 2006 and until now can't find an answer from searching on google. My question is, in 2006 I noticed some websites started having a catalog archiving in a multi sections such as: E-books, software, Travel, Video, Graphics and so on and when you press for example on E-books you get a list of topics like sport, computer, fashion and so on. Could anyone tell me is this kind of website made in php or not? Another question, Is there any software available on the net can make this without programming whole website to do catalog archiving system website?. Is there a proper name for this kind of website because I don't know if it calls catalog archiving website or not?

To understand more what I'm talking about, just look to the pic in the attachment.

By the way, these kind of website usually a member upload the topics to the website for uploading a picture of the topic and link of book or software from rapidshare as example and post introduction to the item that they posted.

they could be written in any number of languages

php\asp\perl\java script\ coldfusion ...

you could probably do it purely in html, but that would be more difficult.

as for type of site i would of said, CMS (content management system) although its not clear what you want the site to do.

Basing your site requirement on a menu structure is probably not the best approach.

actually like what I asked can't be written in Java script or in pure html because this kind of website needs dynamic programming language and HTML is only static. It's impossible. Another thing I'm not going to do only this and what's a problem if I make my website only based on categories things, A lot of websites are having only this kind of system in their website. They help people who are searching for new softwares or for example PC magazines like "PC world". I can think of making it by my own but I'm thinking if there is a ready software that can do it so I'll not spend my time for this, so I can do other thing for my static website such as graphics.

The probelm when I visit this kind of website like this one, it doesn't show that it's written in ASP or PHP.

Is one example that they have a lot of different of kind of catalog such as Music, Travel, Software, Graphics, Movies and so on. Actually they have a login screen as well but I suspend in something that this website extend in HTML not in ASP or PHP. So in which language is it written?.

Another point of view that this kind of website has a popular of people visiting it. I don't know if CMS like Joomla or word press can do something like that. Hope someone can help and guide me. Any suggestion, Any link that I can get benefit from are welcome.

While it's impossible to say, here's one possible answer:

so that is of course one possibility.

The answer I have most confidence in is: whatever language the website's programmer(s) was/were most educated in. After all, why do your visitors care (or even know) what programming language you picked?

with a respect to your words I don't agree with you. Let me ask you something, Can you build interactive website only by HTML. the answer is no way and I dare anyone because you can't build for example a login and register page and where the information will be stored after a user submit something.

Never mind about the visitors to know in which language the website is written, but the visitors are care to see important stuff uploading regularly by members every mints or hour.

But my question was, in which language can be written? I need structure so I can build on because I'm thinking about how can I categorize the list.

if you know any server side language , use it. if you don't know any, and want to learn one, we would suggest php (obviously)

Any server-side language will do, really.

It doesn't matter on which language you pick because they all do the same basic tasks. If you break it down, it's all just a bunch of logic, interfacing with DB servers, etc. etc. - things I imagine every server-side web programming language can do.

As such, it's just a matter of preference. As dagon points out, if you don't know any of the programming languages available, then we'd obviously recommend PHP. Its syntax is a lot like C++ if you've ever written/seen that language.

html is very interactive, hyperlinks\forms .. ?

a menu could be all html (css), with a different structure depending on what section\page your on. After all the server-side language is only being used to generate the html.

thanks guys for your comments. I'm not bad in php but I don't consider my self very well in it. Anyway I think I'm going to start building one by myself and ofcourse I'll ask here if I stuck in something to ask for help 😃

You know I feel the owners of these similar websites are using a ready package sort of Joomla or wordpress that comes free. A lot of people who own a forum they don't program it and they only change the theme and templates and add features in it and they take it from VBulletin download it from google and they start their forum as phpbuilder forum did. Because it's heavy work if you are going to build and program a forum from zero and it will take a long time.

Anyway I'll start thinking for a design the ERD and other things and if anyone even the other members know a ready script that help hopefully post it here.

There may well be a pre written script for what you want, but I was never very clear what exactly that was.
