i want to be able to make this session last longer, im not using cookies as i learnt sessions before them, however will be moving onto cookies in the future. anyone got any ideas, my code is below:

session_register('username'); 
$_SESSION['username'] = $inf->username;

This function has been DEPRECATED as of PHP 5.3.0 and REMOVED as of PHP 6.0.0.
Relying on this feature is highly discouraged.

I never use it.

You only need to do like this

<?php
session_start(); //enable work with session variables

$_SESSION['username'] = $inf->username;

ok thanks, is there a way i can make it last longer than it is, or in that sense make it last for a time of my choice. thanks for that info.

Well, you could use [man]session_set_cookie_params/man to make the session cookie last longer than just the current session, but depending upon the type of data you want to store (and the security/integrity you'd like to maintain), it might just be easier to use a cookie instead.

As far as "learning" cookies, you can easily learn the basics by reading over these two manual pages: [man]cookie[/man] and [man]setcookie/man.

so if i have session_start() in all of my pages to keep me logged in how would i change it in every page to work with cookies.

does this mean i can use session_set_cookie_params() without setting cookies throughout all of m pages as i only have session_start() on them at the moment.
