Combine multiple images?

I'm looking for a best way to combine multiple images from mysql to one image.
(GD2 or Imagemagick)

I need to combine four images on white background. Let's say background is 3000x2000px and there is four "places" for images. Images in mysql have different resolutions. Result should look like an ummm... album page.....
So, what is the best way to start? Any links?
