[RESOLVED] php and mysql wont talk to each other

Hi
I have installed apache2.2 and php 5 on windows 7. When I run phpinfo() all is well.

I have installed mysql too, and uncommented extension=php_mysql.dll
extension=php_mysqli.dll. and set extension_dir = "./ext"

I believe mysql is running 'cause I can log in at the mysql command line.

When I try to run

echo mysql_connect('localhost', 'username', 'password') I get "Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in C:\web_root\mysqltest.php on line 2
"

I guess I am missing something

Any suggestions please

This does not mean that mysql and php don't talk to each other.

It means PHP cannot find the function, which in turn means the mysql extension has not yet been installed/activated correctly.

If it is PHP 5.3.1, the latest
then I can tell you I could not get connect with MySQL when I upgraded. to 5.3.1
And of course phpMyAdmin gave same error.
I tried several things and several different php_mysql.dll ... but nothing helped with new PHP.

There is something about the mysql extension module and PHP 5.3.1
So, I went back to PHP 5.3.0 and I use Apache 2.2 + MySQL 5
Because this works just fine.

Thanks for replies. Bjom - tried your suggestion, still didn't work. Altered the path directory to include php.

Unless I can get this sorted soon perhaps its time to try that earlier version of php

Just seen am running php 5.2.12

and another thing I have extension_dir "C:\php\ext"
its pointing to the right directory, but should i have slashes round the other way. I get a bit confused by this forward/backslash thing

As far as php.ini goes, it doesn't matter - PHP can correctly interpret the path either way.

If you do a phpinfo(), does it show the correct value for extension_dir? Just want to verify that your php.ini file is being read. Also, after removing the semicolon(s) in front of the "extension=" lines, did you restart your webserver daemon (e.g. Apache)?

Yes, I have been re-starting apache as admin.

When I run phpinfo(); I get "extension_dir C:\php5 " for both local and master values.

I don't have a folder c:\php5

I have noticed that phpinfo says this:
"Configuration File (php.ini) Path C:\Windows

Loaded Configuration File C:\php\php.ini "

is that correct? I wondered if I might have been editing the wrong php.ini file

Neither of thetwo php.ini files have "php5" in it, and the two references to it in the apache httpd.conf are in
LoadModule php5_module "c:/php/php5apache2_2.dll"

Any more help would be much appreciated.

What do you mean by "two" php.ini files? You should only have one.

If you're referring to the two example php.ini files that come with PHP, then you're supposed to rename one of them to "php.ini" (they have extra text after the extension by default... Can't remember what it says). Make sure Windows isn't hiding file extensions as well.

asi have installed apache several times now. In the process i think i have renamed and moved several php files. I just noticed today that the phpinfo script shows what looked to me like 2 different locations - and investigation indeed showed that each location has an .ini in it. Also a reference to php5.for the extension dir. I can see file extensions ok. Thanks again for your time.

Sounds like another great example of why one should never move any PHP-related file outside of the main PHP directory.

i followed instructions on several tutorials, and noticed that there seem to be lots of different ways of doing things! Is the extension_dir =php5 wrong?

have now managed to get the extension_dir pointing right at c:/php/ext/
sill get the same error message...

At LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!

After days of faffing and hours wasted, and install to make sure I have latest version of everything ItS SORTED.

Turns out that it is something to do with windows7 not being able to resolve localhost->127.0.0.1

I uncommented a line in this file:windows->System32->drivers->etc->hosts

uncomment
#127.0.0.1 localhost
to
127.0.0.1 localhost

and amazingly all is well...

Well.. I'm glad you solved your problem, but the fact that Windows 7 can't resolve "localhost" to an IP address without modifying your hosts file (which it already can, by the way) would have nothing to do with the errors you posted above.

Ran into some issues getting MySQL to work with PHP, Apache, and Vista. This is what I did to get it going:

1) in PHP.INI change the extension_dir to a hard coded directory. For me it was "extension_dir = "C:/Program Files (x86)/php/ext")

2) Uncommmented the lines "extension=php_mysql.dll" and "extension=php_mysqli.dll" in PHP.INI

3) Also, I've read that the libmysql.dll file in the MySQL installation directory can cause problems. I renamed it and used the libmysql.dll file in the PHP installation directory instead.

After that, it seems to work fine.

If you're using a newer version of PHP (e.g. PHP 5.3, not sure about 5.2), then this is no longer an issue - PHP uses a native MySQL driver called "mysqlnd" that doesn't depend on libmysql anymore.

I've always avoided this previously, however, by making sure that the PHP directory came before the MySQL directory in the PATH environment variable (in fact, I always placed PHP first in the list).

Thanks bradgrafelman and jkurrle for the good info. Putting c:\php first in the path fixed the problem for me. The version libmysql.dll in the MySQL directory was causing problems. I have version 5.2.13 of PHP with Windows 7.

It's a good thing I ran across this thread in a Google search 🙂

Thanks for taking the time and letting us know it worked for you!

I guess this also confirms the fact that PHP 5.2 doesn't yet use the mysqlnd built-in driver that 5.3+ has. Seems like yet another reason people might consider moving to the latest stable version of 5.3! 😉

I was looking at the installation on my home laptop and it doesn't show the mysqlnd driver loaded when pulling up phpinfo(). It shows that it uses ODBC and neither libmysql nor mysqlnd. This is version 5.2.13. Is there something specific I need to do to enable and use either native driver, instead of using ODBC?

Interestingly enough, my WAMP installation on my work laptop uses mysqlnd. Of course my WAMP installation was installed as a complete WAMP package, instead of installing and configuring the individual components, like my home laptop...
