How to force an HTML page to be parsed as if it's php, using CGI php module on server

Hi all, I'm trying to find the answers to this question...

How to force an HTML page to be parsed as if it's php, using a CGI php module on my server. The server is linux. Is this possible like it is on Apache? What files do I need to config besides .htaccess or is it completely different?

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .html

Put that in a .htaccess.

Thanks bpat1434, I tried that, the code that's embeded in the html file gets dumped to the screen, not run by php.

any other ideas?

It was the order of commands in my htaccess

I had tried
<Files ".ht*">
deny from all
</Files>
addhandler x-httpd-php5 .html

This is what worked
addhandler x-httpd-php5 .html
<Files ".ht*">
deny from all
</Files>

You should avoid using the short tag <? rather use the full <?php open tag instead.

Also, it's not generally recommended to parse .html pages as PHP, as this results in .html pages with no PHP content being rendered more slowly. This might not be immediately noticeable, but it will be after you get many visitors at the same time.

This site is driven by a database, with +90% of the pages being php.
There are only 4 html pages on the site and they all need dynamic content (php) inserted. I want to avoid renaming the pages and losing search engine ranking.

But you're right, it is a valid concern and I appreciate your advice. In your opinion, am I doing the right or logical thing?

Use .htaccess redirects if you want to preserve the ranking. It's what is generally done if you ever have the need to move things about.
