Removing last part of field.

Hi all,

I have a field in my database which is a item number and takes the form of ABC000456. I need to just take the last digits from the field but not the zeros. Eg.

Turn ABC000456 -> 456 or ABC000004 -> 4

Not entirely sure how to go about this so any advice would be excellent.

Assuming that you have retrieved the value into the variable $x, it sounds like you can do:

$x = (int)substr($x, 2);

The idea being that the cast would turn the string '000456' into 456.

You could also do something like:

SELECT RIGHT('ABC000456', 6)*1 AS itemNumber ...

if the numeric portion is always 6 digits wide.

A third approach (the second in PHP) is $x = ltrim($x, 'a..z0'); (most notable difference between this and laserlight's code is that the result of this will still be a string, e.g., "ABC000456"->"456"). But if you don't need the full string for something else then it would seem better to do it in the database per bradgrafelman's suggestion.
