Just a question for the wise/experienced.....

I haven't been through any formal schooling for web developing.
I have only read PHP 5 and practiced the examples in the book.
I'm currently reading Beginning; PHP5, APACHE, MYSQL; WEB DEVELOPMENT.

I find it very desireable.

With a misdemeanor (possession of marijuana) on my background, am I progressing into a field that will have me with a loss of work?

hard to understand your question but if you mean 'does learning PHP get you work' the answer is 'maybe' -
it depends on you doesn't it?
if you want it and persevere then most things are possible
you have to be on the ball and turn up to work enthusiastic and keen to learn

it's got be a good target

depends on country\company as to if they care about criminal convictions, guess I've been asked about half the job interviews i have done. If you worked freelance it would probably never come up.

web developers are all over the place here at least, some demand for php programmers but only with commercial experience, to many 'graduates' in the market at the moment, every one this it would be cool and easy to work in the web industries.

if i was starting out, i think plumbing (or one of the other building related trades) would be better.
