[RESOLVED] a problem with (int) and post vars

I have an incoming POST variable that echos as

100001065037762

when I convert it to a number using (int) it echos as

2147483647

here's the code


echo "<br /> POST id = ".$_POST['id'];
$oid = (int) $_POST['id'];
echo "<br /> oid = ".$oid;

what am I doing wrong ?

Nothing; but 100001065037762 is too big a number to fit into an int (at least on a 32-bit machine).

But is it an integer or just an identifier that happens to be made up of decimal digits? If you're not going to be doing any arithmetic with it then it's probably not an integer after all.

aha ! I didn't know about the 32-bit thing

I only need to increment the last 5 or 6 digits a few time by +1 in a loop so I can maybe use substr($str,-5) then convert to an int and then, if it's not near 99999 then i can increment it a few times

Right, so there is arithmetic involved. The substr() idea ought to work (you can go up to nine digits without any issues; it will probably be a while before you reach 999999999; and I'm guessing that the other digits actually encode something else, like what kind of oid this is, so they shouldn't be modified anyway). But a simpler method might be to use [man]bcadd[/man].
