[RESOLVED] PHP ver 4 or 5 on Win 2K

I have had PHP3 installed very sucessfully for about 7 or so years, but need to upgrade. However, when trying to upgrade to either ver 4 or 5 all that I can get is either:

"The page cannot be found"

I have done everything that I can think of in the IIS config, but nothing seems to work or make any difference. Any assistance would be appreaciated.

This has basically brought my server down. I backed up all of my files :mad:, especially my PHP.INI, but when I tried to put it back it was gone I know it was there, but gone is gone.

As a follow up, it appears that everything is working, but the server will not recognize the .PHP extension, Get a message "The Page Cannot be found", but yet it only does this for .php files.

In the server config I have the following setup:

HTTP Headers:
Custom Header Name: application/x-httpd-php .php
Custom Header Value: d:\php\php\php.exe

ISAPI Filters:
Filter Name: PHP
Executable: D:\PHP\php\php4isapi.dll

I have verified that the paths are correct.

Note: php.ini is in the c:\winnt directory.

Er.. why would you send that information as an HTTP header? There's no need for that header - you should remove it.

Also, before we start troubleshooting this... is there a need for you to use IIS? I've always found setting up Apache to be much easier to deal with than IIS (except, of course, if you're using .NET languages or other Microsoft-specific things like that).

If so... what is in D:\PHP\php\ ? Is that the root of your PHP installation, meaning you see files such as php4ts.dll, php.exe, etc. etc. in that same folder?

Have you checked the ACL of the 'php' folder to ensure that the IIS worker process has at least read/execute privileges?

First off, Thanks for your assistance. I did remove the HTTP Headers. I run about 17 domains on it, but other than the fact that IIS has an easy front end, and I have been using it for over 10 years, no, there is no reason. I looked at apache, and did not see a good easy way to setup domains in a menu like the IIS Control panel. I am not using any .NET stuff, but have minimal .ASP extensions. I have no problems with convertering.

what is in D:\PHP\php > Yes, that is the root of the PHP directory. The server does have permissions there in full read/write, etc...

I suppose it's a matter of preference; yes, IIS does have a fancy GUI control panel. The same could be accomplished with Apache using third-party PHP/etc. applications, but I honestly would rather just edit the httpd.conf file since I know I have maximum control over the server's configuration.

Then again, it seems like our preferences already differ greatly, since I would never even consider running a server on a legacy platform that is no longer supported, maintained, or (as of a couple of months from now) patched for security vulnerabilities.

What is the actual HTTP statis code (e.g. 503–Service Unavailable error) returned when you try to access a PHP script? If it's a 5xx code, try checking in the IIS error log (%systemroot%\System32\LogFiles\HTTPERR) for relevant messages.

The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

It is seeing the index.html, but when it access the .PHP is when the above message is displayed.

If that's the IIS-returned error page, then there should be text underneath the first bulleted list on that page, e.g.:

HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

That text tells you the HTTP status code.

The actual link that I am working on is http://www.rvrc.org The page is split due to frames so that tells me it is seeing the index.html, but both of the .php frames do not load, side.php and mainpage.php.

On both frames I am Getting

"HTTP 404 - File not found
Internet Information Services"

where exactly were you looking? Was that in the "Web Service Extensions" area, or were you on the properties page of the rvrc.org?

The ISAPI filter for PHP must be added to both locations in order for it to be executed.

It was on the Properties Page. I looked for the "Web Service Extensions" and do not see it listed. I was working in the RVRC properties and the "Default Web Site".

Woops, looks like that only applies for IIS 6.

You might consider using PHP 5 (since PHP 4 is no longer maintained, plus I believe PHP 5 has some FastCGI improvements) and going with the FastCGI approach - the ISAPI filter for IIS is no longer supported, IIRC.

EDIT: Just as a reference, the PHP manual recommends (and explains how) you integrate PHP with IIS using FastCGI here: [man]install.windows.iis6[/man].

I will try PHP 5 again. FASTCGI not supported under my IIS, so install is not that easy. May look at seeing if I can install Server 2003. That may be the single easiest thing to do. I think I can get a hold of that software reasonably.

Heh, no, the last Windows 2000 server I've managed was decommissioned a long time ago... 2k3 is the earliest I have access to (without installing something earlier in a virtual machine... and I've got too many virtual machines as it is :p).

No problem. Figured I just check. Did not know if 2K terminal services would be backwards compatible or not, guess not!

I didn't realize you meant connect to your server (I was speaking of servers that I currently manage and can RDP into myself). I was indeed able to RDP into your 2K server with the details you posted (which I've since removed, so that the entire world doesn't have a valid username/password to access your server - might want to send details like that in a private message, in the future).

Assuming you don't mind, I can play around with IIS to try and get your PHP pages to work, assuming you'd rather stick with the 2k server rather than upgrade.

Oops. If you can hit the server feel free. If you can see anything obvious, help yourself, the account can disappear... Guess I was not thinking. Doh. Feel free to see what you can do. At this point I am so fustrated with it that I am ready to kick something. I assume you still have the username/PW
