i'm a student taking EEE and would like to implement a shopping cart using php 5.3.2 and mysql for a small company selling books.

For such a large and vague question, I have only some large and vague options:

1. Hire an experienced developer to do it, or...
2. Buy - or find an open-source - third-party solution you can install, or...
3. Get some books, read some tutorials, and spend some significant time learning PHP, SQL, database design, [X]HTML/CSS, and web application security issues; then start building your application from the ground up.
