Copying files from sub domain to parent directory

Hi Guys,

I'm not sure if this a strictly PHP question or if it falls more under the guise of server settings. But, I was wondering if you might be able to help me.

I've created a bespoke CMS for one of my clients and it all works fine. I recently moved the CMS into a subdomain so that the URL was a little cleaner for the client to use.

The CMS allows the user to upload a number of different files for use on the site and obviously;

imagejpeg($image_p_art, "../images/");

No longer works as the subdomain does not have access to it's parent directory. Is there a way I can circumvent this, or settings I can change to facilitate this?

Anyways, any help you can give me would be gratefully received.

Might want to look at the php setting open_basedir as that will prevent doing anything outside those paths.

Hey bpat1434,

I've only just managed to get back to this, thanks very much for the advice. I disabled / enabled (not sure which) open_basedir by adding the line

open_basedir = none

to the sub-domains php.ini file.

This doesn't seem to have solved the problem. The issue is that if I access the CMS via www.mysite.com/CMS/ then it all works properly any action that uses ../images as the path works fine.

However, if I access the CMS vis http://cms.mysite.com then this same path will not work. Do I need to use the full path e.g http://www.mysite.com/images/ ?

I'm not sure about a server setting that you can use, but outside of using one, you would have to use the full image path. When using the subdomain address (cms.site.com), the directory "cms" is treated as the root, so all absolute paths are relative to that folder. So I suppose what you could do is use something like "/images/filename.jpg" for all your paths (starting with "/" so from the web "root"), and then using .htaccess redirect any requests for "site.com/cms/" to "cms.site.com".

PHP doesn't care what subdomain you're using to access the script, since what you're dealing with are paths on the file system itself. Thus, a path of "../images/" will refer to an "images" subfolder inside the parent of the directory where the script is located.

If the scripts are located in the same place (e.g. the subdomain simply points to the 'CMS' folder in the root of your site), then the file system paths won't change. What may change, however, is the correct path that should be outputted in the HTML by the CMS. It sounds like the CMS was configured such that it behaves as if it were installed in "/CMS/" and will use that path accordingly when generating HTML code.

That's exactly what I was referring to (notice I said "web root"), so when requesting the image with HTML you would use

<img src="/images/filename.jpg" />

But I see what you're saying, he was asking about the path as how PHP views it.
