Open-source Membership coding

I rather fancy creating an online todo list, where peeps can create an account and setup their own todo list or project.

I figure the whole membership thing is such a common requirement that surely there is some good, free, ready-made code out there?

If you go with any of the popular PHP frameworks, they all probably have user authentication libraries you can use with them. I've used the CodeIgniter framework with the DX_Auth library with good success, and that's just one of many such libraries available with that one framework. You might also consider if there is an existing CMS that might form a good basis for your application, which then would probably already have the user system built it.
