inputting time

on my hockey site i track goalie minutes played to calculate his goal against average.

right now i have to calculate to nearest minute.. so say 56:20 i would just put 56

i want to put into the database as either seconds or would go in like 56.33
i would like to input as 56:20 and convert for me into the database

not sure on how to make that 20 goto .33

then when i want to calcualate all his time for each game as a total

56:20 --------56.33
61:42 --------61.70

results

118:02 ------118.03

but it has no codeing help

the table i use is gminutes..any help on getting starting is appricaited... once i get started i can prob finish

Well how did you get from 56:20 to 56.33? Didn't you:

Strip off the colon and the number after it
Divide the number after the colon by 60 to get a decimal fraction
Round the decimal fraction to the nearest hundredth.
Add that decimal fraction to the whole number of minutes

Just do the same thing in PHP. One way of doing it would be to use [man]explode[/man], e.g.

$clock = "56:20";
list($minute, $seconds) = explode(':', $clock);
$minute += round($seconds/60, 2);

Well... you should be able to get that by yourself using basic math. If you have 20 seconds, how do you express that as a fraction of minutes? Divide it by the total number of seconds per minute.
