check digits in an integer

hey all, hw do i check for digits in integer? suppose i have my numbers

$nums = 12;

and i want to confirm that the inter 12345 starts with "12"... pliz help

Treat it as a string and check with say, [man]substr/man or [man]preg_match/man.
