Using an image as a HTML FORM Submit button in Opera.

Hey guys. I've stumbled across a bit of a problem I can't solve.

I use various POSTed HTML forms on my site and I've started replacing the SUBMIT buttons with images to make my forms look nicer. This works great in IE and in FF but for some reason, in Opera, the form isn't posted properly.

At first I thought it was a problem somewhere else on my page, but to test my theory I just set up a blank page with nothing but a submit button. If you click submit it should say SUCCESS. Works in IE and FF but not in Opera.

Is this a known bug? Is there a fix for it?

How are you testing for the presence of the button click in the POST'ed data? Different browsers submit "IMAGE" elements in different ways.

As such, have you considered instead using a normal submit button with a bit of CSS styling?

In this instance it's a very simple check:

if (isset($submit))
{
echo ("SUCCESS!");

Ah, but who said Opera will submit an entity called 'button' ? 😉 Do a [man]print_r/man on $_POST and I think you'll find that it submits the variables in a different form, probably something like 'button_x' and 'button_y' (two separate POST'ed entities).

It's this inconsistency across all browsers that made me ditch the "image" type long ago and instead go with CSS-styled "submit" buttons.

I think you're right. Doing this in CSS is easy enough so there's no reason why that shouldn't work just as well. It's just annoying that I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out the problem with my main site, when in actual fact there isn't one.
