I am trying to improve on my skills but so far I've only read(PHP 5, and Apache MySQL and PHP beginners) books and practiced from their examples inside. I need to expand, advance my imagery and displaying skills. If there is anyone out there with suggestions, plz feel free to respond.
What are most people looking for when they want to hire a developer for their site? I am planning on building my first one starting next week and so far my site will have a very plain look. Is there anything I could try out to liven my page up?

How the page looks nothing to do with PHP, but rather the HTML it outputs, and in particular the CSS styling you associate with the HTML. Your best bet is probably to look into HTML/CSS tutorials and/or books to learn how to use CSS to achieve your desired designs.
