Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() PLEASE HELP!

hello everyone

here is my problem

fatal error undefined mysql_connect <<

i dont have it open at this minute, but i logged into cpanel, i loaded my files into file manager, one of which asked me to fill in where it says something like mysql_connect (server, user, password, dbname), i created a database, gave it a name, user and password, i then went into phpmyadmin and put files into the databases i created...

i typed in the web address using my domain name, clicked the file, logged in and it open up... but most i couldnt access most of the stuff on there because of the error message telling me "fatal error undefined mysql_connect" which directs me back to the file i uploaded and the line where it says i should enter my (server, user, password, dbname)

thanks to anyone who can offer any help on this. its absolutely driving me around the bend.

The [man]mysql[/man] extension hasn't been installed and/or isn't enabled. Note that this extension has been superseded by the "improved" [man]MySQLi[/man] extension (and another alternative is [man]PDO[/man]).

hey.. thanks for the reply. really appreciate it!

im wondering... does it matter that the code says mysqli when cpanel is using mysql? how would i go about installing/locating and enabling the extension, and how would i go about using the alternative you suggested?

thanks again for your help. i'm really inexperienced with all this and really need the help.

That depends... what do you mean by "cpanel is using mysql" ?

thanks for that bradgrafelman... i'm giving the manual a go now.

by "does it matter that the code says mysqli when cpanel is using mysql?".. i meant to say that on cpanel, when i sign in, i see an mysql icon, but no mysqli icon.

is there a big difference there if the code says mysqli when on the cpanel its a mysql icon?

The cpanel interface allows you to interact with the MySQL server (I'm guessing - not sure which "icon" you're talking about specifically). There is no "mysqli" server - it's still a MySQL server.

The terms "mysql", "mysqli", and "PDO" I'm referring to above are three different PHP extensions used to interact with a MySQL server.
