As far as your question, it's difficult to answer without knowing what is in the serialized data. I would suggest not extract()-ing it, but rather testing the elements you need to see if they exist (such as via [man]isset/man), and proceed accordingly. You can use [man]print_r/man to inspect the contents of the unserialized data to help debug.
