Today i encoutered this trouble...
move a website from asp to PHP.... the new server doesn't have asp installed

the problem comes when thinking of many pages linked from search engines and other portals to inner website pages,,,, that will lose their counter part....

e.g. www.mysite/mypage.asp?id=23423 as an answer of google search will not find anythig...

so looking around someone suggested me the mod_rewrite technique setting up
the .htaccess file on the Linux server....

do you have a better solution for this?

You could indeed use mod_rewrite to properly redirect the requests.

For example, you could redirect all requests where the requested filename ends with ".asp" to the same request using ".php" instead.

You should make sure when you're doing the redirection that you're using the proper HTTP status code (e.g. 301 - Moved Permanently) so that intelligent web spiders know to update their links so that the ".asp" URL will be updated with the ".php" URL rather than the two being seen as separate pages.

Is there not also some way to configure apache so that it uses PHP to interpret files with file extensions other than .php ?
