PHP5-CLI question

I'm just trying to put together a quick system info script.

I won't post the whole script here but you can check it out at

It seems that if I define a variable, such as

$hostname=system('hostname -f');

Without a call to print $hostname - it's automagically printed anyway.

Is there some sort of workaround for this?

yup read the manual. look at the alternative functions to system on the left of the manual page for system that clearly states "system — Execute an external program and display the output"

Ah, as funny as it may sound, reading the manual didn't even cross my mind!

To explain, but not excuse, not thinking through the problem first - I just reformatted my HD, switched from debian lenny to squeeze and have been re-setting up.

I appreciate the tip, ill look into the man page.

If you want to write PHP, you must read the manual. It is perhaps the finest language documentation I have ever encountered. For a given command you can just visit http://php.net/command.

I would try [man]exec[/man]. You can get the script output back from the command as an array -- one element for each line.
