probem sql function( search in database )

Hello everybody, hope you all ok. I'm working on a project, i code a artist script. my problem is : in an artist or lyrics script you fine

a b c d ...z

i want to know if there's a sql function that can request for only the first letter in the database. for example. when i click on A all the artist that begin with a will populate.
please help!

WHERE fieldName LIKE 'a%'

If things are case sensitive, convert all to upper or lower case

WHERE UPPER(fieldname) LIKE UPPER('A%')

The function that convert between upper or lower case can differ depending on which database you use.
