very weird session behavior

Hi all,
first time posting here, thank you all for viewing and great appreciation to those who responds.

So I have 2 pages, login and member.

At the login page, you enter your username and password and click submit, then the page submits to itself and check to see if the username and password matches with the ones stored in mysql database.

if they match, some unique id will be stored in session variable and pass on to member page.

however, there exist an weird inconsistency within this process.

first, if i log in by typing in the url as "www.mywebsitename/login.php" everything will work perfectly fine, in the sense that, i will be able to log in and my unique session ids will be saved and pass on to member page. Yet, if i type in my web address into the url without "www." the unique session variables won't be stored and i won't be able to login.

There is more to the story, and more weird behaviors, but I'll stop here to see if any of you guys can provide me with some guidance. Thanks

Not weird, cookies are domain specific www.foo.com is not the same domain as foo.com
