[RESOLVED] IIS / mysql / port 80 already in use issue

Hi,

I hope someone can help me.

On my local test server, I run IIS / Vista.

Since recently, my database connections have stopped working because my default website in ISS cannot be started. It kkeps giving an error "port 80 already in use by another application".

I have looked at it in depth and even brought to computer to an expert etc. and noone can see anythign else goign on on port 80. Despite a good registry clean up etc, no luck.

My thinking is now:

If I change the port number, the service starts!!

Can I run my default website in ISS on a different port than port 80 and what do I have to do to get MySQL and PHP to "connect" with it so my databases work and I can also run PHPMyadmin?

Any advice much apreciated.

Of course - you can run it on any port you want.

Er... nothing, since neither of those two things "connect" with your webserver at all.

Well then I doubt that they were "experts" in that case. :p It's rather easy to find out what's listening on any given port in Windows:

Open a command prompt (Start->type "cmd.exe" and press enter)
Run command:
```
netstat -ao | find "0.0.0.0:XXX"
```
where "XXX" is the port number you believe something is using. Note that this assumes that the application (Apache, for example) is bound to all interfaces on the system; if that is not true, then replace "0.0.0.0" with the IP address of the interface the application is configured to use (or just omit it altogether).
You should see a TCP connection open on that port in the "LISTENING" state, e.g.:

G:\Users\Brad>netstat -ao | find "0.0.0.0:80"
  TCP    0.0.0.0:80             ads:0                  LISTENING       5508
```
The last column is the PID of the process that opened that connection.
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
Switch to the "Processes" tab.
Go to View -> Select Columns... and ensure that "PID (Process Identifier)" is checked.
To facilitate in locating the process quickly, sort the process list by the PID column (simply click on the PID column header at the top).
Locate the corresponding PID using the number indicated in the netstat output (e.g. 5508 from the above example).
Congrats - you found which process has a listening connection open on the port number in question. (e.g. for me, the Image Name from above was "httpd.exe *32", which is Apache).

Ah ah..

Yes, I wasted my money on so called "experts"...

I followed your detailed instructions, for which I'm very gratful, and found that port 80 was being used by "KService", which is the UK TV streaming software "Sky player".

Switched it off and recovered instantly the use of my server.
