FDF?

I need to create FDFs on the fly and then populate a PDF form with the data. I was using PHP's FDF functions. However according to http://www.php.net/manual/en/fdf.installation.php

This extension is considered unmaintained and dead.

Is there some alternative to use? How do I go about creating FDFs now?
