[RESOLVED] PHP Failing to run

Hi all,

I've been trying to get PHP to run all day and to no avail! I've done this so many time in the past and not had any problems but this time BOOM!

I'm running Windows 7 Professional. I've tried multiple versions of PHP and apache but none seem to work. I know the problem lies with PHP because I can't even run "php --version" from the command line.

One interesting point is that I can run the above "php --version" from an administrative command prompt.

Is there some security issue I am missing? I've tried installing php with some extensions added and with no extensions. I've tried earlier versions of php and the most recent snapshot. All give the same behaviour. I get an error in the application event viewer reporting php5ts.dll as the faulting module but I think this may be a red herring due to the Administrative command prompt working fine.

Any help would be greatly appeciated.

If you are just installing apache and PHP for development purposes, you might want to save yourself a little hassle and go grab Wamp or Xampp. I personally use Wamp(and I use Win 7 64bit), but Xampp should be equally good.

Thanks for the advice. I am aware of the various pre-built stacks that are available. I want the flexibility of installing which version of PHP/MySQL/Apache that suits our live environment. I am fairly sure that PHP would not run under that environment either.

I'm fairly sure it's something to do with some DLL's or environment variables that are causing problems. Not sure if I've got something left over from a previous installation that is causing some problems.

How did you install PHP? Did you use the .zip package or the .msi installer?

I've always in the past used the MSI installer. In an attempt to get this working this time around I tried the ZIp option but still the same behaviour.

I just tried installing WAMP to give that a try but the same behaviour... CLI crashes when I run from an non administrative command prompt but runs fine when the command prompt is elevated. Some strange permission or environmental setting that is killing process.

Hi all,

Thanks for your help and input. I've since had need to reinstall the laptop completely so the problem has actually gone away! I have no idea what was causing it though!
