Hello All,

I'm getting a new laptop and i'm torn over what OS to go for. I wondering whether it's worth getting a GB less of RAM and get Windows 7 Pro instead of Home.

I've been advised this because I may need to work from home in the future so might at some point need to have remote access to by work PC from home. However this is not guarenteed and is basically just keeping my options open!

Is it possible if i was to get home to upgrade to professional in the future, or would this mean having to take home off totally and reload Prof from scratch?
Or is it possible to get remote access to a domain without Windows 7 prof?

I know a little about Computers, but this is an area where i'm pretty much in the dark so any help or adivce would be greatly apprecaited.

Thanks,

Which edition of Home? Is it Home Basic or Home Premium?

Personally, I would take the laptop with the better specs. You can always install a better version of Windows later. Plus with the better specs your performance will be that much better.

As for installation... it is my understanding that you can always upgrade from one version to another one "higher" than it, but I recommend doing a clean install. In either case, you can always upgrade.

Define "remote access". Do you mean simply Remote Desktop, or something else? I'm pretty sure Home Premium can do what you'll need it to do. Perhaps try asking at the IT department at your work.

EDIT: here's a comparison chart for the different Windows 7 editions.

I'd opt for more RAM and stick with the Home version. If in the future you find you need a feature in Pro that is not available in Home, I believe there is an upgrade path available to do so. Besides, more RAM is always useful. 🙂
