PHP for Absolute Beginners

New to PHP and following the PHP for Absolute Beginners (published by Apress 2009) worked example, now half way thru Chapter 6 and it won't work. 😕

I have tried copying the source code solutions posted on the books website which but still can't get it working. Has anyone encountered these issues, if so what did you do to resolve them?

Those of us without the book won't be able to help without knowing what code you're working with and what specifically you mean by "it won't work."

Only thing I can suggest is to make sure that all errors are displayed by inserting this at the top of your script:

ini_set('display_errors', 1);
error_reporting(E_ALL);

All the PHP scripts I have written so far have the code that you mentioned in, except I'm setting the value to 2 rather 1, i.e. :

[FONT="Courier New"] ini_set('display_errors', 2).
[/FONT]

I will try to make my next 'PHP for Absolute Beginners' question more specific and attach the relevant code.

Welcome to PHPBuilder! I do hope you find people here helpful and basically friendly 🙂

Unfortunately, there are often problems in many programming books that are aimed at a particular language, especially if they're trying to be "up to date" and constantly adding material.

Several long-time members of this site, in fact, have published one or more books regarding PHP, and one of the problems they mentioned is that they have "RUSH" deadlines from the publisher, who then gives their text to be retyped by their own secretaries using Microsoft Word (or similar) which often "auto-corrects" entities in their sample code, and, of course, these typists know very little about PHP code.

 tags around your code, as it keeps the forum's format intact AND allows us to see certain error conditions in your code due to the color/highlighting.
