PHP Button Function?

I want to make it so when you submit the form it will not only refresh the page but UPDATES my database.

Rather then echo "Record updated...." make a redirection:

You also need to use a hidden field to pass back the name of the person you are voting for.
You also need to put a name='submit' in the submit tag, So $_POST['submit'] is set.

At the moment you are updating every records vote count with this line.

       $sql_query = "UPDATE females SET votes = votes +1";

Rather than just the image you are displaying.
