Support for fereign characters

How do I encode certain characters to keep them in tact. For example, if someone submits this in a form:

Mælody

my db stores:

Mélody

[bradgrafelman]

Common approach is to use UTF-8 throughout your site (e.g. in the HTML pages, in the DB, etc.).

when brad says "use utf-8" there are a few places you have to "use" it.

• put a charset declaration in your html if you are displaying this data or if you have a form to collect this data (see the source of this page for example)
• declare your database tables as utf-8
• use multi-byte string functions if you do any string parsing in PHP.
