Text fields with mysql

Im trying to find the right code to accomplish this, i have a form that when text is entered it goes to the database and another form that is pulling this info into it, what i want to be able to do is enter the text in the text field and when i hit enter 1 or 2 times it drops for a new paragraph which it does, but when the form pulls the info it is all together is there a code that will pull it and have text in paragraphs as it is in the database?

apply the function nl2br() to the outputted data

I have tried this already, this is what i had and it did not seem to work:

$response = addslashes($_REQUEST[response]);
$response = nl2br($response);

looks like your applying it to data that goes in to the db, not out, if that's not he case i would have to see more code to understand the issue
